What is a transformer?

The transformer is a small metal box-shaped component of an HVAC system. It operates by adjusting high voltage levels to lower, safer levels (24V) to power the thermostat, control board, blower motor and ignition system.

Where is it located?

The transformer is usually mounted to the housing of the blower motor behind a small steel door.

Maintenance Tips

Keep all terminals and wires tight every 3 months

Remove any dust and debris from the transformer and its surrounding area every 3 months

Check for any damage to the transformer every three months

Check for the appropriate voltage on the weak side (24V to 28V) and (120V to 240V) on the primary side

Lifespan

The lifespan of the transformer is 10 - 15 years.
